Free Outdoor Hot Spring Baths:
Fukiage Hot Springs, Mt. Tokachidake (Hokkaido)
An outdoor hot spring bath where the Northern Fox pays a call
If you heard of an outdoor hot spring bath that’s free, you’d probably jump at the chance. But not everyone would be willing to “jump in” without making sure it meets certain conditions—women in particular. For instance: Is it kept clean? Does it have a proper dressing room? Can you enjoy a good view from the bath? There would be strict provisions. I found one that didn’t meet any of these requirements, but in spite of this it is popular. It is Fukiage Hot Springs near Mt. Tokachidake (Hokkaido). Here there is mixed bathing, the inside of the dressing room can be seen from outside, and there’s not much of a view to speak of. Yet, in spite of the distance you have to walk from the parking area, even women take baths here. Many people who live nearby also bathe here. When I took a bath there I didn’t even carry a towel. But I soon understood why it is so popular. It is the exhilarating feeling you get from the water! No hot spring anywhere can compare with it.
